THE ANNA NOKIA INTERVIEW
Where are you from? What does Philly's art and music community mean to you?
I am from Northeast Philadelphia. Born and raised. Philadelphia's art and music community is very important to me especially since we have such amazing talent coming from here recently. Especially, the creative talent Tierra Whack. She’s such a diverse and distinctive character and it opens up many opportunities and doors for other women coming out of Philadelphia or women anywhere, period.
How did you come up with the name Anna Nokia?
My friend Idalis came up with it for my. Anna comes from my middle name “JulieAnna” and she added Nokia at the end and now it’s has a ring for a dj name.
When did you start designing your own clothes? How are your pieces made?
My pieces are all handmade by crocheting. I started when I was about 8 and started taking it seriously in 2014 with wearable pieces.
What is your creative process like when creating a new mix? How would you describe your DJ style?
When I get to making a mix, I think of what is going to make people dance but, also making sure to get some different sounds. What I mean by that is I want to make sure that I’m incorporating new artists/ people on the come up in my mixes. I want to make sure talent is heard and hopefully put people on to some new shit.
I don’t know how to put into word my style. I can dj a variety of genres. Baby loves her trap music but, I am versatile. I don’t want to be boxed in as a dj that only djs this or that. I love switching it up and pushing myself to try different things.
When did you start DJing? Do you hope to do more shows? What types of events are your favorites?
I started djing at the beginning of this year (2019). I definitely have some events coming up so lookout for those! I love house music events. I feel like you can unleash and let go with house music!
Have you experienced prejudice as a woman in Philadelphia's art scene?
Not yet but, I’m sure as I grow, there will be situations that I will and I’ll just have to overcome it. Women are still being accepted into the dj world and the men need to move over and let some bad bitches get it lit.
What are some of your favorite brands you've modeled for? What are a few brands you hope to model for in the future?
I modeled for SlashedByTia and that shoot was amazing. Absolutely loved it. I felt like a gypsy haha. But, at this moment, I don’t really look forward to modeling. I’m quite focused on Djing and making my own clothes but, if an opportunity to model for a great brand arises, then I will definitely pop off, you know me.
What's next for you?
Some events lined up for the summer and more to come always along with some cute mixes on the way for my babies so be sure to look out for those. I’m looking forward to perfecting my craft in all mediums. Period, pooh.
