THE VAMPIREPISS INTERVIEW
What’s your story?
I was born and raised by my grandparents in Camden, New Jersey. My grandmother died when I was 15 so I moved in with my aunt out in Cherry Hill as a result. Life in South Jersey started to feel stagnant without many friends or family so I decided to move to Philly for college when I was 18. I started making music on Garageband with apple headphones a year after I had moved to Philly about 2 years ago, none of it really sounded any good so I just put it on hold for a while. A year ago, I picked it back up and actually met Moe Witcher through a mutual. He was the first to believe in me and really helped me get to the level of independence I’m at now with my music. I think I just got really lucky with my life. Not many people make it out of Camden, it's one of those places I can go back and visit 5 years from now and it’ll be like nothing had ever changed.
What does the local music community mean to you?
It's about way more than just the music right now, the artists in Philly are really working toward unification. I’m talking collaboration across mediums, huge weekend events, and countless networking opportunities. Personally, I like to keep to myself but if something really catches my eye I’m vocal and active about it.
Who are some of your biggest inspirations, both locally and mainstream?
My inspirations vary into different genres but I would say that, in terms of the present, Corbin (Spooky Black) is a huge influence on my music. Adam McIlwee (Wicca Phase) is also a huge influence to me in terms of songwriting - I truly think he is one of the greatest writers of this generation.
Locally, I’m inspired by everyone. Being able to see artists of all mediums work toward their goals really just makes you want to get off your ass and do some shit too, you feel me? In terms of music, I think artists like Zubin, Rip Eternal, and Holy Mountain have been bringing something beautiful to this city genre-wise, I’m definitely inspired by them.
What’s one thing about you that you think is misunderstood? What do people not know about you, or one thing you want people to know?
I’m not really sure. If I had to see myself as someone else I’d find it hard to take anyone named Vampirepiss remotely serious. I’m not really a serious person, but my feelings are serious and my music is serious. Understand that. Except for Famous, I wrote that song when I was high as fuck.
Tell us about your most recently dropped project, or an upcoming project.
I have an album I started working on last fall. It's going to be my most original work to date. Entirely produced and engineered by me. It’s gonna sound nothing like any of the music I already have out. There is no set release date at this time.
Are there any artists you enjoy collaborating with the most? Are there any artists, local or mainstream, that you would love to collab with?
I really love to collab with XOXOG$ Imfoul because he’s quick and witty as hell in the booth. ”I know what’s at stake yeah you can call me Ruth Chris,” that shit is hilarious. I’m currently working on a song keenanfromlimbo produced that I’m really excited for. I’ve also got a couple other collaborations I’m looking forward to in 2020. A friend of mine in Germany just sent me some crazy beats too.
What has been your favorite project you’ve released so far, or the one you’re most proud of?
Saudades. See the craziest thing about it were the limitations I had weighing me down around the time I was creating it. The apartment I used to live in was really small, and I had nowhere to record at during the day, so I started to stay up until 7AM every night and record in the kitchen while everyone was asleep, for like 3 months straight. My roommates at the time definitely hated that but it was something important for me to make for myself, as a personal catharsis. Moe Witcher, actually engineered all of the vocals and mixed the entire EP which was sick. I’ve got an eternal love for him.
Who else in our community do you think is Next Up?
What’s next for you?
With the start of a new decade I have a lot of plans for my music and supporting the people directly around me. I recently started a small collective with a few close friends called XOXOGRO$$$HIT or XOXOG$ for short, but we’re still in the very early stages of being a group. A music video for my song Ruthless featuring XOXOG$ Imfoul should be out within the next month or so. Vampirepiss shirt and lighter bundle sometime this year, and my first live show sometime soon. Plus the experimental album. Big steps.
